House of Representatives FY98 Defense Appropriations Bill
The House Defense Appropriations Bill passed 322-115 on July 29, 1997.With regard to Nunn-Lugar programs, the FY98 Defense Appropriations Billfollows the lead set by the Authorization Committee. $97.5 million in cutsfrom Cooperative Threat Reduction programs, the same amount eliminatedfrom H.R. 1119, were approved. This leaves a total of $284.7 million.Reductions were made as follows: $12.5 million from weapon storagesecurity; $41 million from reactor core conversion; and $41 million formchemical weapons destruction activities.
The Appropriations Committee also expressed their displeasure over theslow implementation and expenditure of previously appropriated funds. Theyadmonished the Defense Department to exercise greater management andrecommended that FY98 funds be made available for obligation for onlythree years.
